So far, we have learned about Hoboken by going for walks around the community to practice being social scientists: observing, drawing, taking notes, and asking questions about the things we see.
What is a community? Second and third graders decided that people in a community have to have something in common, whether it's the place they live, their beliefs, being members of the same family, or going to the same school. The community of Hoboken is based on location. Students practiced describing where to find Hoboken and locating it on a map. Look at a map together and see if they can find it!
We also discussed how a community changes over time. Students were given about 25 events in Hoboken's history, and worked with a partner to create a timeline of the 12 events they thought were most important in making Hoboken the city it is today.
