Science: Sound

The Second and Third grade classes have been investigating many aspects of sound over the last couple of weeks. They have been challenged to make sound waves that pass through a solid, water, or air.

Using a tuning fork, the students listened for vibrations. What do they hear? Can you see the vibrations? 

Students have been challenged to make wind, percussion and string instruments with materials provided. They were challenged to add water to the bottle provided to see if the sound they produced was different than when the bottle was empty.

We used a xylophone to investigate volume and pitch. If we start at a low C and hit each bar up to the high C, will the pitch get higher or lower with each note?

Students listened very carefully and recorded what they heard.

We will continue to investigate sound over the next couple of weeks. Ask your child what they have discovered so far. Have they made a plan to make their own musical instrument?
