We have been reading books written by Daniel Pinkwater for a few weeks. He is an author who once lived in Hoboken, and several of his books have references to Hoboken, and other areas of Hudson County. All of us have read or heard read to us at least 5 books, and some of us have a list of 10 or more! As we read, we have enjoyed and noticed many things. He has a way of making connections between texts in subtle ways, he uses animals as characters quite a lot, and he gives interesting names to places and characters in his stories. We have laughed often as we have read about Irving and Muktuk (the two bad bears), Mason Mintz or Kevin Spoon, or Henrietta, to name a few.
We would like to celebrate our reading together on Thursday. Although we will not be celebrating all day, we will do some special things in the classroom. Your child is welcome, but not expected, to dress as a character from a Pinkwater story--the Blue Moose, perhaps? Mason Mintz with his Doodle Flute? Henrietta the chicken? the Pickle Creature? the Fuzzy Bunny?
We will also have a special (small serving!!) snack that is listed in his books: pickles, mini-bagels, pretzels, mini-blueberry muffins. We know how important it will be for your child to eat healthy on this day, so please provide some form of vegetable or fruit for his/her snack that day so that they eat that before they eat a little something to celebrate our learning.
By the way, going to Pinkwater's website is a treat! Many children have written to him in the past (the DP Forum section of the site), and received a response. Because he also writes for adults, be aware of previewing some of the material on the site.
