With the end of the Fall term, we move in to a quick 3 weeks before our Winter break. Within this brief stretch, the 2nd and 3rd grade have begun several projects to celebrate the coming holidays and changing seasons.
In our Art Workshops, we are exploring the idea of color intensity by creating a monochromatic winter scene using black paper and white paint; brushes were also off-limits and students had to paint with palette knives and sponges! Students were challenged to make a foreground, middle ground and background in their composition. Additionally, they needed to create a variation in intensity to create depth with foreground colors being the most intense and background colors being the least intense. The last step was to add snow effects using these new tools. This project was tough, but rewarding - the results look great.
In our Special Projects Shared Space work, students chose an animal model and created a Christmas ornament out of clay. These were then painted with acrylic paint and wrapped up in bubble wrap to send home. While delicate (and sometimes accidentally-amputated), these animals were fun to make and ended being great pieces of work.
